I have a quick question…
While doing faceups on Vinyl what paints/mediums do you use?
Ive bought (quite impulsively) another BjD and i was going to attack his face with paints to make warpaint >x< when he arrives… doesnt matter if it wipes off either since its not a permanent thing with the character he's modelled off haha.
Mitani: On vinyl dolls I use artist grade pastels, watercolors and acrylics. If you’re doing something non-permanent, I’d maybe suggest working with pastels? A little more permanent, and I’d go with the acrylics. Watercolors are my last option, since no matter how well you seal, there is always the risk of staining a vinyl head.
Mitani: Actually, a lot of the information/techniques are the same for both resin and vinyl face-ups. Main differences are, that vinyl is a lot quicker to stain than resin is; but resin is more susceptible to sun damage. ^^;;;;
As much as I hate to say this, since all dolls deserve a loving home…. but if you’re ever not sure about a face-up technique for a vinyl head, pick up an inexpensive vinyl fashion doll and practice on that. I’m guessing that the doll purchased on an impulse was one of the smaller ones; so practicing on a fashion doll head will also have the advantage of getting you used to working in that particular scale. ^___^
Stallion is the impulse one xD and the one i will be more or less experimenting on, but even if i botch it i will be keeping him. He is based off an OC so it works if the face-up isn’t perfect xD (excuses excuses)
Lysander is the smaller one but i can doodle on his body a little to get used to the paints in areas if i want to (maybe… if he lets me xD). Stallion will be 55cm xD Rather an ambitious start really but i am asking people more and more and i have checked up on several technique tutorials, its just the materials i was struggling to find a solid answer with ><
Staining wont matter as much because it is warpaint so if it ever comes off and still stains the lines then it will still look ok (well to me anyway… buyers might not be so sympathetic ten years down the line or so)
Sweet! Though, when Stallion gets there, put him in a body sock. This is even more important if you are intending to have him wear dark clothes…. or even some colors of jeans. Red also stains like the dickens. Parabox and Volks sells some, but it’s just as easy to make one out of stretchy white fabric. I suggest getting a 2-way stretch over a 4way stretch, but that’s just me…. and only if you want to try and keep the body stain-free.
Wow…. a $200+ impulse doll. o.O;;;
But seriously, congrats on the new boy. 55cm obitsus are really pretty. ^_____^
xD i know its daft… Student with money= Meh i don’t go drinkin’ every week why not? *laughter* I saw a few of Soom’s limited and fell in love with the facepaint on some faceups… then decided My character is having a doll incarnation xD
I’ll line anything dark I make for him best i can too (thanks for another tip xD) he is meant to have a lot of bare skin so its going to be an ass with that xD
Thankyou! ^^
(when he gets here i will link to my album which as I dress him more etc will be added to xD – you’ll get links of him more or less finished X3 — He should have left Tokyo by now ^^–)
Wow, I love the blue. It really pops when put with the silver.

Thanks! ^^
It’s not all that easy trawling through tutorials when they’re all for Resin Dolls xD
Stallion is in shipping so I should be getting him within the next few weeks. Onward to getting paints >3>
